Are You Playing the Game or Just Wearing the Jersey?

Episode 4

The Medicare industry is full of agents wearing the jersey.

They have the license.
They have carrier contracts.
They have business cards, a website, maybe even a logo.

But looking like you're in business isn’t the same thing as actually playing the game.

Many agents enter the industry excited about the opportunity, only to find themselves spinning their wheels a year or two later. They jump from one strategy to another, listen to too many voices, or follow advice from people who have never actually built the kind of business they want.

Eventually, frustration sets in.

The problem usually isn’t talent.
The problem is direction.

In this article, we break down four lessons every Medicare agent needs to understand if they want to stop feeling stuck and start building real momentum.

1. Stop Following Everyone

One of the fastest ways to stall your progress is by trying to follow too many voices at once.

The Medicare industry is full of advice.
Webinars. Facebook groups. Coaches. Gurus. Podcasts. Training videos.

Everyone has an opinion about what works.

The problem is when you try to follow all of them.

Every time you switch strategies, you reset your progress. New scripts. New marketing. New messaging. New systems. That change almost always comes with a drop in performance while you learn something new.

Many agents never give a strategy enough time to work because they abandon it too quickly.

Real growth comes from staying focused long enough to refine and improve what you're doing.

You can’t microwave success.

Most marketing systems and business strategies need time to develop. The agents who win in this industry are the ones who commit to a direction and keep improving it over time.

2. Learn From Someone Who Has Actually Done It

If you're going to take advice from someone, make sure they understand the game you're trying to play.

There’s a big difference between someone who talks about business and someone who has actually built one.

The best coaches aren’t necessarily the most famous or the loudest. They are the ones who have spent years studying the process, making mistakes, and learning how the business really works.

A good coach provides:

  • Clear direction

  • Honest feedback

  • Proven systems

  • Perspective when things aren’t going well

Bad coaching, on the other hand, creates confusion.

It leaves agents questioning every decision they make and constantly looking for the next strategy instead of mastering the one they already started.

When you find someone who has real experience and understands the process, listen carefully and commit to learning from them.

3. Decide — Don’t Just Choose

There’s a big difference between making a choice and making a decision.

Choosing is casual.

Deciding is commitment.

The word decide actually comes from a Latin root that means “to cut off.” When you truly decide on a direction, you cut off the other options.

Many agents say they’ve decided to grow their business, but they leave the door open for doubt, excuses, and distractions.

They try a marketing strategy for a few weeks, then abandon it when something new comes along.

That’s not deciding.

That’s experimenting without commitment.

Real progress happens when you evaluate your options, make a decision, and give that decision enough time to work.

4. Accountability Is Yours

A coach can guide you.

A coach can give you strategy.

A coach can give you feedback.

But a coach cannot do the work for you.

One of the most important mindset shifts for any business owner is taking full ownership of results.

Not blaming the market.
Not blaming leads.
Not blaming coaching.

Ownership means recognizing that your actions — and your consistency — are what determine the outcome.

When agents truly take responsibility for their results, something powerful happens.

They start analyzing their decisions more carefully. They commit more fully to the strategies they choose. And they stop wasting time blaming external factors for problems they have the ability to fix.

That shift alone can completely change the trajectory of a business.

From Unknown to Unstoppable

Building a successful Medicare business doesn’t happen overnight.

It requires direction.
It requires consistency.
And it requires the willingness to stay committed to a strategy long enough to improve it.

The agents who succeed in this industry aren’t necessarily the most talented.

They’re the ones who:

  • Find the right guidance

  • Commit to a clear direction

  • Execute consistently

  • Take ownership of their results

If you’re serious about growing your business, the question isn’t whether you have the tools or the opportunity.

The question is much simpler.

Are you playing the game…

or just wearing the jersey?
